Apps Finish Third Gate City Classic Appalachian lost its first conference game of the sea son Friday night but bounced back to whip arch-foe Lenoir Rhyne Saturday en route to a third-place finish in Greens boro’s Gate City Classic. The Friday night loss came at the hands of the powerful Guilford who out-paced the Mountaineers by an 86 55 score. The hot-handed Quakers caught Appalachian in a game long shooting slump which saw the Mounties connect on less than 30 per cent of their field goal attempts. Working its tost break to perfection, Guilford stomped to a 19-7 lead with only eight minutes gone. The Mounties cut the margin to nine points (27-18) with six minutes remaining in the half, but Appalachain again drew a cold shooting hand as the Qua kers raced to a 45-22 half time score. Without the service of four victims Gary Cbenevey and Allan Price through most of the second half, Appalachian fell behind 67-31 with 12 min utes left in the game. With in the next three minutes Guil ford outscored the Moun taineers 9-3 to lead 76-34. Appalachian staged a mild comeback to finish 31 points behind at 86-55. Speaking Of Golf BY JOB MAPLES Received a note from Bud Barber the other day from Sa rasota Fla., with the news that daughter Julie had tied up the ladies amateur course record at the tough DeSoto Lakes Country Club. Julie tied the record held by Mrs. Scott Probasco, a mem ber of the 1955 Curtis Cup team and set in 1962, Par for the course is 75 and the all time low record for ladies is held by professional Mickey Wright. Julie played the front side in one over 38, then fired a three under par score of 35 on the back nine for her re cord tieing score at 73. So it looks like the “Big Bear” has reason to be proud. It was nice while it lasted but all good things must come to an end eventually as did the weather which had been so nice for about ten days at a time of year when such is not the ex pected thing. Playing golf in Boone under mild balmy con ditions in early December is not exactly normal, but play we did. T!Ji£. „ ^decision _ to close ^ the course* fax the 1937 sea^pp. has now been-made, helped along by the heavy rains Sunday and Monday. The course was start ing to show the effects of being played on under less than per fect conditions, the greens be ing rather soft and wet. Ball marks were hard to repair and failed to heal over since the grass wans’t growing, and as many can attest, those three foot putts were getting harder all the time as a result of the footprints. It’s been a good year for the most part for local golfers and it*s been a long year, the course having been open since April 1st. Ibut now it* s time to give it a few months of much needed rest. John Parker and H. J. Cot trell went to Greensboro last week and found time to visit and play with David “Hindu*' Henderson at the Carlson Farms Country Club. Hindu is assistant professional there to Don Smith and John says he is hitting his tee shots a coun try mile. When you hit it four ty yards in front of John and H. J., its really been tagged ’cause those boys are not ex actly short hitters. Received a card from Ellen Counts who is visiting some of her folks in Kentucky. She sent her regards to all for Christ mas and the New Year.
